1. Product Overview

C11Z-A is primarily positioned as a latent curing agent/accelerator for one-component epoxy systems. Its rigid triazine ring structure provides high heat resistance, while its long alkyl chain improves interfacial wetting and delivers excellent bonding strength. Its high activation temperature contributes to good storage stability at room temperature. C11Z-A is mainly used in adhesives, including structural adhesives and one-component adhesives, as well as epoxy powder coatings, paints, and electronic encapsulation materials.

Compared with its close relative 2MZ-A, C11Z-A features a long undecyl chain introduced at the 2-position of the imidazole ring. This C11 alkyl chain provides two key advantages. First, it significantly improves compatibility with bisphenol A epoxy resins, allowing easier dispersion in liquid epoxy formulations. Second, it substantially increases the molecule's overall hydrophobicity, reducing the moisture absorption tendency of the cured material. However, its higher molecular weight means a lower concentration of active imidazole groups per unit mass, so its typical dosage is higher than that of 2MZ-A.

3. Product Features and Recommended Applications

Product Features

  • Triazine-Based Shielding: The N1 position of the imidazole ring is connected to the triazine ring through an ethyl bridge. This bulky nitrogen-containing heterocyclic structure significantly changes the molecule's spatial configuration and solubility behavior, effectively suppressing its reactivity with epoxy resins at room temperature.
  • Long-Chain Compatibility and Isolation: The undecyl chain increases the molecule's structural affinity for epoxy resins. At room temperature, the resin phase physically encapsulates and isolates the molecules, while improved dispersion helps prevent premature reactions caused by localized accumulation.

Recommended Applications

  • One-Component Epoxy Adhesives: Provides good storage stability at room temperature and rapid curing at medium temperatures. The long-chain group also contributes to good adhesion.
  • Epoxy Powder Coatings: Its solid powder form is suitable for powder coating formulations. With an activation temperature of 127°C, it can be used in anticorrosion and electrical insulation powder coatings.
  • Paints and Liquid Coatings: Offers better dispersion in the epoxy phase than 2MZ-A, while providing good heat resistance in the cured coating film.
  • Electronic Encapsulation Materials: Provides heat resistance and electrical insulation. Suitable for use with dicyandiamide (DICY) and phenolic resin systems.
  • Laminated Materials: Its medium-temperature curing window is compatible with lamination processes.

4. Advantages and Precautions

Advantages

  • Good Room-Temperature Stability: Meets the processing and storage requirements of one-component adhesives and powder coatings.
  • Improved Compatibility and Dispersion: Performs better than the related 2MZ-A due to the structural similarity between its undecyl chain and bisphenol A epoxy resins.
  • Excellent Adhesion: The long-chain group improves interfacial wetting on metals and other substrates, contributing to strong bonding performance.
  • High Heat Resistance: The rigid triazine framework and well-organized crosslinked network contribute to excellent thermal performance.
  • Low Moisture Absorption Tendency: Its hydrophobic structure helps reduce moisture absorption in cured materials compared with more strongly polar accelerators.

Precautions

  • Dispersion Requirements: With a melting point of 187–195°C, insolubility in water, and limited solubility in methanol, dispersion in liquid epoxy systems depends on the milling process. Poor dispersion may result in uneven curing.
  • Dosage Considerations: Its higher molecular weight and lower concentration of active imidazole groups mean that a higher dosage may be required to achieve a curing rate comparable to that of 2MZ-A or 2E4MZ.
  • Safe Handling: Wear nitrile gloves and safety goggles during handling. Avoid contact between the powder, skin, and eyes, and take appropriate precautions to minimize dust exposure.
